Measure a Cornwall marketing budget by putting every channel, annual cost, qualified enquiry, customer and attributable revenue figure in one view – then label the confidence of the evidence. The aim is not perfect attribution. It is better investment decisions.

Start with the one-page marketing investment table
| Channel | Annual cost | Qualified enquiries | Customers | Revenue / gross profit | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Offline Media | £ | # | # | £ | Low / medium / high |
| Google Ads | £ | # | # | £ | Low / medium / high |
| Organic search | £ | # | # | £ | Low / medium / high |
| Social | £ | # | # | £ | Low / medium / high |
| £ | # | # | £ | Low / medium / high | |
| Partners/events | £ | # | # | £ | Low / medium / high |
Include media, creative, tools, agency or freelance fees and meaningful internal time. A channel can look efficient when only the media invoice appears in the denominator.
Separate what can be counted from what can be claimed
A platform can count impressions, clicks and configured conversions. Analytics can report sessions and campaign parameters. Search Console can report Google organic clicks and impressions. A CRM or sales record can report qualified opportunities and revenue. None alone proves incrementality.
- Observed: the system recorded an event.
- Attributed: a rule assigned credit to a channel.
- Influenced: evidence suggests a contribution.
- Incremental: the result would not have happened without the activity.
Use the strongest word the evidence supports. Marketing credibility improves when the reporting admits uncertainty.
Fix the basic evidence chain
- Use consistent UTM source, medium and campaign values.
- Configure meaningful calls, forms, bookings and purchases as conversions.
- Record lead quality and outcome in one sales system.
- Add a short, optional “how did you hear about us?” question.
- Use distinct print URLs, QR codes or phone routes where proportionate.
- Connect offline sales to source when identifiers and consent allow.
- Review broken tags and duplicate conversions.
- Agree who owns the monthly decision, not only the report.
Google Analytics explains that campaign parameters identify traffic from a source, medium and campaign. Use lower-case, consistent naming so one campaign is not split into several rows. Tracking helps attribution; it does not remove cross-device or offline gaps.
Ask better questions of unmeasured spend
A material annual marketing line with no attributable enquiries deserves a conversation, but not an instant verdict. Was the objective direct response or awareness? Was the audience evidenced? Was the creative distinctive? Was there a trackable route? Did branded search, direct traffic or sales conversations change? What would a controlled reduction or geographic test reveal?
Use a monthly decision page
| Keep | Improve | Test | Stop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear commercial contribution | Promising but under-instrumented | Credible hypothesis and threshold | No role, evidence or learning plan |

Frequently asked questions
Can all marketing be measured precisely?
No. Privacy, cross-device behaviour, offline conversations, long buying cycles and multi-channel journeys create gaps. Use multiple sources and state confidence.
Which metric should lead?
Use a commercial outcome such as qualified pipeline, bookings, revenue or gross profit, supported by earlier indicators appropriate to the journey.
How long should a channel be tested?
Long enough to reflect the buying cycle and gather a meaningful sample, but with guardrails for cost, quality and obvious failure. Define the decision date before launch.
